And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
heard one I had examined on the apron at the then-named Lost Nation Airport as it flew over my brother's back yard at 500' or so. my chest reverberated at the sound of the Merlin.
If you want to replicate that, volunteer to work an airshow.
For six years I volunteered at Planes of Fame airshow every May. I think my last year was the gathering of P-38s. Among other duties, I marshalled the Lightnings from hangers to the line. Can you say friggin awesome!
In late WWII, a Mustang pilot flying the Hump encountered an ME-109 opposite direction, half mile separation. Both pilots immediately pulled into a circle. After one turn each aircraft straightened out to continue on its way. The American pilot figured the hun was just as tired, cold, hungry as himself.
My grandfather flew a P51 out of Orange County Airport, CA (hangared in Martin Aviation hangar). I was maybe 7-8 old and years flew from OC to Albuquerque. All I can remember is the ringing in my ears afterward.
