And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Crater Lake Swim. That place, it's hard to even get to the water the sides are so steep.
I swam there as a young man. Second coldest i've ever been in my life by the time i was done. I didn't stop shivering until i was nearly done with the hike back up to the rim. It was late August.
The water temperature in June is 68 degrees! Too cool for my bones.

That's the surface temp.
DeleteA foot down, it's closer to 40°, and it drops off from there.
And worse on cloudy days.
The local Indians tell of a giant crawdad that can reach up and pluck you off the ridge path well above the water level. Never saw it myself...

ReplyDeleteThe place IS gorgeous, though. Creepy to think how deep it is. (1949 feet. Just a bit under a half mile. Yikes.)
