Left to Right: Bully Choop, Paradise Peak, Shoemaker Bally, and Shasta Bally. Bully/Bally is the local Wintun Indian word for mountain. Last year all the snow was off Shasta Bally by May 15th. Not this year. Probably snow through mid June.
Studebaker with the enormous Mt. Shasta stratovolcano seething quietly in the background
Good Looking Country! No or a very few people!
ReplyDeleteTrue! It's very surprising how much empty, open country there is once you get maybe a mile or so away from major roads or towns.
DeleteBest post ever, CW! Maybe show the one lane bridge next time.
DeleteVery nice, sir!
ReplyDeleteI've been to Oak Run. I cut the brush from the transmission line right-of-way running up the hill from Buzzard's Roost Road about 20 years ago.
ReplyDeleteI love that country. Only problem is that it gets hotter than the hubs of hell amongst those low elevation rolling hills around there.
There was a great little general store at Oak Run back then, a man and wife operation. Boy, did she make a great deli sandwich.
I always dwell over your road trip posts; very appreciated!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Seem more "real" than the Friday thing. They should be a monthly ritual. Trade back n forth between the white truck and the orange car. And bring a mutt.
Deletegreat truck!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous country. 1976-2018 lived in or owned a 2nd house in Blowing Rock, NC at 3,600'. 1/4 mile from my abode was an 1,800' gorge w/ Grandfather Mtn. (5,900'+) 15 miles west. Then got tired of snow, moved to a remote Sea Island on a peninsula outside of Beaufort, SC.
ReplyDeleteResort towns have beauty, would never live anwhere else, save for where these pics were taken. But, no way in Cali.
Hey Anon, you picked the 2 best places in the Southeast to live! Well done!
DeleteGreat country and great pics, CW! Love following your explorations and travels!
ReplyDeleteWonderful trip, and as usual great pictures. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteNow that I'm retired, are the roads shown passable in stock 4wd pickup and is remote camping allowed. Don't want to stay long term, just a couple of days before moving on to explore other corners of this still great country.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. Looks like it was a nice drive!
ReplyDeletethank you for those pics. Looked like a great trip.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful! You need to do a couple of these a month. Many thanks for sharing the drive.
ReplyDeleteYears ago, I worked for Shasta County Environmental Health and that was my district. I never got tired of the Intermountain area, but I got plenty tired of Shasta County government politics and quit 'em in 1995 after they decided I was a bit too independent and pulled me back to Redding.
ReplyDeleteEver been to the top of Clover Mountain? Old USAF radar site. The road may not be drivable now, but it was passable for good 4x4's back in the day. Wierd area, but fantastic view from the top.
Goin' through Inwood, used to see lots of geezers with metal detectors all over the place. Prospecting/treasure-hunter magazines always seemed to run stories about some ol' miner havin' buried his fortune in the area.
ReplyDeleteLived a few miles past Shingletown store, just off Hwy 44. Worked in Butte County, and if'n I left before 05:00 the CalTrans snowplows might not've been out yet on 44. Headin' down Black Butte Rd, and into Tehama Co. and Hwy36, in the summer one might get behind a cattle drive and just idle along for a mile or so. Still think about movin' back to that area.
