And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Great show. I remember watching it with my brothers back in the late 60s when I was 9 years old, and mom making us shut it off or change the channel because she thought it was not a good show for us young boys to be watching.
It was another great show for a kid - with a neat blend of something that was almost Steampunk, way before its time, a fantasy/ sci fi theme. Conrad did all of his own fighting stunts, until he broke something - and then they clamped down on him. I had read that part of the reason it was cancelled was due to the violence and fight scenes. But there is what Buttram said, too - one year they just decided to go urban with more gritty stuff and that was the end of westerns and rural life, no more Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, etc. Mod Squad instead.
Not just CBS though, every network went through it, cancelling shows that were still very popular in their ratings and loyalty, but trying to put something in front of a younger, urban demographic - what they saw as the future. That was pretty much when I stopped watching much TV, now that I think about it. I couldn't stand situation comedies.
It's ironic that today some of the cable networks' most popular shows are the ones that were cancelled 50 years ago, isn't it?
I'm glad that today some of the obscure old westerns are making a comeback. Lawman, The Deputy, Tales of Wells Fargo, The Texan, Tombstone Territory. I've never seen most of them before. And they sure beat watching the news, if you know what I mean.
I loved that show
ReplyDeleteI've got a few seasons on DVD, which is nice since it doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere.
ReplyDeleteWas cancelled even though it was #4 on the Nielsens. As Pat Buttram (Mr Haney) observed, "They (CBS) cancelled every show that had a tree in it".

ReplyDeleteIt was called CBS' "Rural Purge" at the end of the '70-'71 season.
DeleteThe New York city people at CBS have hated Deplorables for a long time now.
