A $200 Shotgun: The Mossberg Maverick 88 Test. Very Interesting.

  1. Considering that the regular Mossberg Persuader that I bought a few years back for $200 is now going for $450, when you can find one.

Shotguns have almost double in price in the last three years.

  2. My Mossberg 500 came with an 18in and 24in combo from big 5 for $175... best shotgun I've ever owned. Just gets better every time I shoot it. At least 4000 rounds through it conservatively.

  4. love my mossy 500. solid gun for the last 20 years.
but, OMG there is so much wrong with this video.
    1. 12 gage is the wrong choice for home defense, especially if there are multible occupied bed rooms. 410 is a much better choice.
    2. any long gun is a poor choice for home defense. the long barrel is hard to get around corners. a handgun of appropriate caliber is a better choice.'
    3. if i need more than the 5 rounds in the tube, i am not in home defense, i am in combat. i will run away before becoming involved in combat.
    4. this, and other low cost 12s are intended to be meat getters, not combat weapons
if you want to reduce the recoil, and don't mind lugging the extra weight, remove the butt pad, drill a 1/2 inch hole in the hollow stock, and add around 5 pounds of aquarium sand. fill the hole with candle wax and reattach the pad. works great on the 500 i use in the tree stand deer hunting(slugs), and duck hunting from a blind(1500fps 4 shot). wouldn't want to carry it for quail, rabbit, or pheasant hunting tho, too heavy, but use 7 shot for that hunt so don't need the extra weight.

  5. Well, he's still a dick for what he did to the Colt 1903, but he did good on torture testing the Maverick. I've got an older Mossy 500 that is a Frankengun from pieces parts. Works perfect, would/will bet my life on it.
A friend in So. Cal. got a dotgov depredation contract killing feral pigs (and all non native species) on San Clemente Island. The ONLY gun he would use was a 590 or 500 Mossy. The competition was using some tactical, semi auto Beretta. It turned their reloading thumbs into hamburger, until it ejected some bolt part and went in-op. My buddy loaned them a 500 to finish the contract.

  6. Unless you are planning to take this $200 shotgun to war, this test mean absolutely nothing. In the meantime, you get an effective, Mossberg HD shotgun. And, yes, I have one. Sitting by the backdoor of our rural home.

  7. I have a Remington 870, short barrel with tube extension.
