And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I've been to every South American nation except for Suriname and French Guiana. I solo backpacked in Guyana which is next to the the two I mentioned. All is jungle, wild, impenetrable, beautiful. Civilization---roads, infrastructure and so on---will never arrive there. Suriname and those other two are wild and wooly, and definitely not suitable for the casual traveler. The three Guianas are one of the few places left on earth where you could be killed and eaten by Indigenous or devoured by animals. My kind of place.
That could be misconstrued by Greenies about how bad the US is, but we are at the same latitude as the Sahara Desert. Whatever land area is not wetted by the Gulf area is plains and desert.
Yep. The US from the Mississippi to the far west side of the Rockies was called until 1860 or so the "Great American Desert". What enabled it to be settled was the genius of Caucasians and their belief in "Manifest Destiny".
In some past goldmine of trivia, I recall reading a nugget that said the US now has more forested acreage than existed in early colonial days. One explanation may have been nature itself; combined effects of climate, storms, draught, etc. served as catalyst. Periodically naturally induced fires burnt until means to continue was exhausted. Weather, rivers-lakes, natural barriers or simply no fuel put out fires.
It has also lead to the vast increase of the numbers of hooved rats, aka: deer. The eastern states were clearcut to a great extent for farming purposes since the 1600's, and lots of that have been let go to forest now. In the 60's, we would hunt abandoned family farms in eastern PA. House and barns sitting and rotting away. Sad.
I wonder if one has a hard time seeing the forest for trees, especially in Suriname.

Yes, I see that globull warming has led to the record snowfalls recorded this year, not to mention the expansion of Arctic ice flows....
