In the 60's, we would hunt abandoned family farms in eastern PA. House and barns sitting and rotting away. Periodically naturally induced fires burnt until means to continue was exhausted. Weather, rivers-lakes, natural barriers or simply no fuel put out fires. What enabled it to be settled was the genius of Caucasians and their belief in "Manifest Destiny". I solo backpacked in Guyana which is next to the the two I mentioned. All is jungle, wild, impenetrable, beautiful. Civilization---roads, infrastructure and so on---will never arrive there. Suriname and those other two are wild and wooly, and definitely not suitable for the casual traveler. The three Guianas are one of the few places left on earth where you could be killed and eaten by Indigenous or devoured by animals.
