And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
'The Big Country' isn't too shabby either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ogmIDd040U
That top pony looks like it's got a Bureau of Land Management wild mustang brand. There's got to be a lot of love and trust between that gal and that horse.
It's a great movie. Interesting side note about the scene where James McKay rides Old Thunder, from IMDb:
"According to actor Slim Pickens' daughter, her father doubled Gregory Peck in the scene where Peck's character was bucked off the horse. Pickens owned the horse and didn't want anyone else riding it."
I've also read that there was a secret code between he and the horse. He would be gentle as a lamb until Slim would give him the signal, then he'd turn into Old Thunder. And nobody making the movie could ever figure out what the signal was.
Both riders appear to be wearing sneakers. I'm sure the horses appreciate the lack of boot heels. Brave young lassies there, especially the bare back rider.
From John Ford's "Rio Grande", the best horse riding ever filmed.

That was on Grit late last night. Didn't watch, but I'd seen it before. That is pretty spectacular.
DeleteNot bad! That guy that slid behind the horse might not have been able to have kids after that stunt, though.

ReplyDeleteI don't think such a thing as a calm horse exists. Nor a sane one.
