I wasn't going to say anything, but you're right. The guy that bucked that peaker and the one below it to the left 'lock-washered' the cut. In other words, he bucked those big logs from two sides and the cuts didn't quite meet. Not a big deal so long as you're only off by a few inches.
Sugar Pine isn't bad for having 'shake'. It's White and Red Fir that are famous for it.
All that country burned up three years ago in the North Complex Fire. Broke my heart.
The old timers who knew those Hall-Scott motors said you could tell how they were tuned by how long a flame they shot out of the stack on a hard pull. They'd pull the hand throttle and stand on the running board in the dark to check them out.
That will keep the toothpick factory going for a couple of years.
