And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Maxfield Parrish (American, 1870–1966) The River at Ascutney, 1942
This won't win me much favor with feminists, but I would take a Maxfield Parrish painting over Georgia O'Keefe any day. The O'Keefe painting above this one just seems flat and amateurish and of the Primitive school. Parrish was able to capture light in a way that few others have managed. The light in his paintings seem to emanate from the canvas, it has a glow of its own.
Very beautiful. I'd love that hanging on my wall to go with a couple of sunset scenes already there.
