And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Much preferred the Pan Am Clipper flying boats. I never flew in one but my dad as field engineer for Bendix Radio in the late 40's did thousands of miles on em. He never mentioned the DO so it must have been a rare aircraft even back then.
Wooden ship's wheel? Close, but no cigar. See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bundesarchiv_Bild_102-08049,_Flugschiff_Dornier_Do_X,_Cockpit.jpg
Considering what else was available in 1929 (the Boeing Clipper was 9 years in the future, the Short Empire 7 years) it was an amazing accomplishment but all those engines on top made the wing very inefficient so it had a low ceiling and top speed. It couldn't fly over weather or mountains. The engines and propellers available in the late '20s didn't match Herr Dornier's ambitions. Al_in_Ottawa

Basically a big promotional moneypit for Dornier and Weimar Germany.
ReplyDeleteInstead of a yoke, I'll bet it had a wooden ship's wheel.

Adolf Rohrbach's flying boat took a number of payload and distance world records away from this Dornier and several US craft in 1928.
