Great living space, but you'd better have an industrial strength air conditioner, and the cash flow to keep it running

    1. Swamp coolers use lots of water, a problem in the desert.

  2. Yeah those work pretty well where there's no humidity, like this location.

If it's a humid environment, not so much.

    1. Not at that layer.
So move your defensive lines outwards.
Don't wait until they're at the patio door. ;)

  7. If the overhang on the eaves for the south face was done right the house will get little to no actual sun in the summer but plenty of sun during the winter. With the tile floor they have a nice thermal mass to heat up in the winter to keep things warm at night.

  8. True, but don't discount the rollup blinds above all of the windows.

  9. 1) Triple-pane glass.
    2) Solar power.
    3) Air drawn in through buried earth tubes cools to 55°, and is bone-dry all summer, at an annual cost of $0.

If one doesn't do this stupidly, it costs far less than a conventional set-up, and is sustainable in perpetuity.

And you wouldn't even need a swamp cooler, let alone a/c.
