Shockingly Expensive Wood

  1. There was/is? a shop in Boulder,CA that sold redwood slabs. Some were as big as a door. Saw some beautiful tables made from a single piece at a shop in Carmel,CA but way, way out my price range.

  2. My brother was a sawyer in a sawmill in the '70s. His basement was full of burls he had sawn. Many of the best were Doug Fir. Some big (coffee table sized), some little (clock sized). He had both in his living room. I'm not sure what became of the burls aging in his basement, come to think of it. They were considered a fringe benefit of his job.

That sawmill no longer exists. The valley it was in is now full of wrecked pickups and marijuana grows.
    I preferred the '70s.

  4. Myrtlewood only grows in two places in the world, the Holy Lands and from the South West Oregon Coast down along the California coast.
Where I grew up in Coos Bay/North Bend, there used to be several wood shops that specialized in making things out of it and there is still at least one left in Coos Bay that I know of.
Even back in the 1970's, a big table made out of a single Burl would cost a couple thousand dollars.
We had two BIG trees growing right on the edge of the property. The leaves on Myrtlewood trees are very similar to Bay Leaves and are very pungeunt in a Eucalyptis way. They will repel fleas if spread around pet beds and the local Indians used them for a variety of medicinal purposes.

    1. I'm in Fairview, over the hill from Coquille,. My backyard is full of myrtlewood trees, all along the creek.

Did you ever stop by Phil Clausen's shop in Riverton on Hwy 42S?

    2. Never did make it out to see that. My Grandfather had a piece of property for a while out in Fairview though.

    3. Indians would put a candle in a bowl of water in the middle of the tepee at night. Fleas would hop in the water and drown. I know it works because I tried it.

  5. About a dozen years ago I had 900 sq ft of myrtlewood flooring put in a house I was building. It was about $5/sq ft from Slice Recovery in Coquille OR, plus another $10 to install and finish. It turned out beautiful.
