And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Ksar Draa, Algeria. A mysterious circular fort isolated in a sea of dunes.
I don't know its "story," but any structure out there that HASN'T been consumed by the blowing sand, must be something special.
ReplyDeletein the middle of nowhere on the way to nowhere
ReplyDeleteNow THAT'S a hideout.
ReplyDeleteoasis?
ReplyDeletePortal to an underground alien city? The X-Files...do...do...doo...do.
ReplyDeletewas probably a lush forest when it was constructed.
ReplyDeleteI get thirsty just looking at it. But plenty of sand for bricks and mortar
ReplyDeleteSo where did the stone bricks and the water for the mortar come from….??
ReplyDeleteThe Sahara was temperate with grass prairies and trees 10,000 to 15,000 years ago supposedly before any civilization capable of building such a fort…
ReplyDeleteSo was there a previous civilization before “recorded history” now extinct…?

ReplyDeleteBuilt by whom, when built and why are questions still unanswered…
Beau Geste Camp Zinderneuf??
ReplyDeleteThe key to its existence is seen at the base of the walls. It's the top of a hard-stone mountain or hill in the sea of shifting sand.
ReplyDeleteYou build permanent structures like the fort on top of hard stone, not soft sand.
Because it is stable (nothing is ever 100% stable) it could be 100 years old, a thousand years old, 5,000 years old or more.
It may be as old as the beginning of desertification of the Sahara, which brought about the proto-civilizations of pre-Egypt.
All you need is a productive well or decent dew-trapping systems and you could make a go there.
probably guarding a well
ReplyDeleteDon't open any containers found there which are marked with snakes.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I come here:
ReplyDeleteIt took John Wick three movies to find this place, and CW pulls it up just randomly.
Did you catch it at the :18-20 mark, C.W.? Sneaking one in every now and then, eh? Cheers!
