And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The Quiet Man - Maureen O'Hara is a true bombshell in this movie.
The movie was full of stereotypes about Ireland and the Irish, but I still liked it. It poked fun at things we all laugh about. It always plays on TV around St Paddy's day. (My GGgrandfather, emigrated from Ireland back just before the Civil War.)
Ford spent the money on the Ireland exteriors and one can see where he skimped otherwise- but no one notices, really because he was a master film maker and he had a hell of a story. pro fact: the good protestant reverend was Barry's brother.
My wife and I went to the town it was filmed in (Cong) and spent a couple of days there. Lovely spot. The movie actually was responsible for getting the town electricity.
Never seen this movie.
ReplyDeleteHighly recommended and it's on Prime TV currently.
DeleteOne of his best films. Maureen O'Hara? Well, she is Maureen O'Hara, after all!
ReplyDeleteExcellent, excellent movie. One of Wayne's favorites. Shows his underappreciated acting chops.

ReplyDeleteOh yeah, and Maureen O'Hara. Wouldn't you like to carry HER over the threshold!
ReplyDeleteSeen it so many times, enjoy it every time.

ReplyDelete...and Barry got him the job. It's a fine movie, although both Wayne and O'Hara were about 15 years too old for the roles they were playing.
ReplyDeletea stick to beat the lady with. what a line!
