Appreciate the impressive size of that big yellow wing

  1. One of my uncles flew on one of those at the end of WW2. During training he told of flying along the coast, California I believe, and cars on the highways were passing them.

  2. Amazing lift available. They needed it to get out of the water and into ground effect quickly. There’s a video of different aircraft test towing gliders in WWII. This girl jumped in the air and had to wait for the glider to get airborne. All others the glider waited for the tow to lift off. If you fly, that feat jumps out at you.

  3. Only when I saw the two near one another did I realise that its wingspan was only two feet shorter than the Lancaster!

  4. Probably the happiest sight for any downed aircrew or survivors of a sunk warship.
