And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
For those of you who can access the BBC iPlayer, they have made this book into a six part series. I found it by accident last week, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Knew it had promise when the opening backing music was AC/DC If You Want Blood.
Apparently the BBC have also commissioned a parallel story based in the European theatre.
^^ the tv series is available on Bezos Prime. At least here in Soviet Canuckistan. I haven't watched it yet but with Mother Corp and Bezos involved I'd be surprised if it is anything but a wokefest.
I read the book 5? years ago, it is a good read. I just watched the 1st episode on Amazon Prime and it is "a dramatization" all right. There is an Algerian femme fatale spy, a black RAF pilot, so there is a bit of wokeness.
Epix Channel is carrying "SAS: Rogue Heroes." It rates an 8.0 on IMDB, which is pretty damned good. I am no real authority on the SAS, but I am fairly familiar with its founding. So far, the episodes are fairly accurate with regard to the macro-facts. Micro-facts like conversation and banter are, of course, mostly made up. Still, I consider the series to be topnotch.
On Amazon Prime, a subscription to Epix Channel is required, but the last time I looked, a 2-month prescription was $1.99 each month. That money is well worth it, even if the only thing you watch is this series.
Since we're talking Brit commandos, who's heard of the SBS (Special BOAT Service). Stumbled on a used book in the history section of my local. I'd never heard of them before. Another bunch of brass ball types, the Brit's version of the Navy Seals, I suppose.
SBS started off as an offshoot of the SAS - for operations on the Aegean Sea during WW2. Funny that what is now part of the Royal Marine Commandos / Royal Navy started off in the British Army.
Yep, pretty badass bunch of dudes. Big fan of LRDG (Long Range Desert Group) - nothing like raiding the enemy from behind their lines by crossing miles of trackless desert.
We could use a few million guys like this to fix the worlds' problems the politicians have created today.
ReplyDeleteThe book's cover photo says it all. Those dudes look capable of some serious shit.

Thanks for the tip on the series. Epix is $6.00/mth on Comcast/Xfinity. Epix was recently acquired by Paramount.
DeleteMy library has a copy of the book. Someone is reading it right now, so I put a reserve on it for when it's returned.
