Thick-Chord Wing gives extremely high lift at low speeds - look at the Ford Trimotor, or C-4A in Army service in the late 30's - essential for Grass/Unimproved Airfields like this one. Most modern Red Air Force Jets in all categories are designed to operate from Dirt/Gravel Roads and Frozen Snow or Ice.
