The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? I have a .303 Savage take-down made in 1908 according to the serial number. Found it in a gun shop for a pretty cheap price back in the early eighties. Bought up all the ammo that I could for it and a set of dies. That thing is pretty beat up, but shoots to where it should......
I passed on many Savage 99's in my time and regret it. My cousin bought his grandson one in 30-30, straight wrist stock, and a tang aperture sight. The regret set in fully when he showed it to me. I wanted it bad.
They're still out there. I found a very lightly used 40's era 300 a couple years ago at an attractive price; go and do thou likewise. But do check for cracks in the wood where the receiver tang fits into the butt stock.
savage vs savage
