And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Yogi Berra and Casey Stengel, sometime in the early 60's
I met Yogi in person twice in Bergen County, NJ. Once in the mid-1950s when I was in high school at a sports store when he was giving autographs. The second in the mid-1960s when I was in law enforcement at a country club at 3 AM when he was sleeping off a drunk in his car parked in the lot.
Casey was the Mets' first manager, brilliantly documented in Jimmy Breslin's "Can't Anyone Here Play This Game?" One of the all-time great baseball books.
Two greats, salty and tough as an old boot and just as scuffed up.
