One of two ways: Either the pickup was parked behind the combine and the operator couldn't see it [unless the combine has a rear view camera you can't see behind the cab] or someone stopped behind the combine as it was backing up. I've backed into things I couldn't see and I've had tractors stop behind the combine. Either way, no good comes of it.
There are rear view mirrors on the cab but could still have blind spots. I hated it when driving truck and you'd wonder what happened to the car behind you that got in your blind spot.
