And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Eileen Sheridan on her record-breaking ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 1954. She did the 842 miles in 2 days 11 hours and 7 minutes.
Just so ya know, its all uphill from Lands End. During Eileen's ride there was a snowstorm. Not only did she loose her shoes but the spare tubes. The latter was important since soon after Eileen had two flat tires.
Undaunted, she continued her ride. After all, even pushing her bike uphill, barefoot, through the snow was no match for people back then. The amazing part is Eileen was barely late for school.
14 plus mph even if no stops. In other words "all out" for the entire 59 hours!!!

She is riding one of Alf Hetchins frames. I was at his shop in the early 80’s. I believe it was located in Lands End.
ReplyDeleteIs the guy in the background about to throw a brick at her?
ReplyDeleteI love it-not a stich of safety equipment just like when I was a kid, plus simple toe straps. The good ole days.
ReplyDeleteAre not brakes for safety?
DeleteBrakes are for speed. They make you quicker. You go faster into corner knowing that you can slo down in shortest possible time.
DeleteThat's about 2.5 minutes per mile.
ReplyDeleteI have her autograph!
ReplyDeleteSTO
Probably never fell off her bike. Maybe she should run for President!
ReplyDeletePresident of something, most certainly.
DeleteI translated into Texan; the distance from Texarkana to El Paso. In 2 and a half days. Extraordinary.
ReplyDeleteShe was 31 at the time. And she's still alive, at the age of 99!
ReplyDeleteI’m chafed from just reading the article.
