And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Arrow Maker. Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. ca. 1904 - 1907
The dude in that photo probably had a grandfather who could tell with vivid detail how they used those arrows and scalped alive New Mexico Gov. Charles Bent in 1847. What the govt. did to the Taos natives after the incident is similar to Nazi revenge. If you want to read a terrific history of the West, which is primarily a bio of Kit Carson, Bent's brother-n-law, check out Blood and Thunder by Hampton Sides. https://tinyurl.com/yjk25cm7

Not only did they scalp him alive, they used a bowstring to do it.
ReplyDeleteBent's Fort by Lavender is an excellent history as well.
