And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Due to the scarcity of building materials most RAF and USAAF bomber bases had no hangars so almost all maintenance was done outside. It must have been a miserable job when the weather wasn't so pleasant. I thought the machine guns were removed between missions? Al_in_Ottawa
A well-known Air Corps/Air Farce axiom notes that without the maintenance crew working all night, the pilots aren't going to be giving the tires a cursory kick before taking off in the morning:

Al, similar to pulling the distributor cap on parked vehicles, the critical parts were removed.
