And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I'ma gonna cry. Cause I'm not in the picture. I don't care if she only does 100 kt, I'll enjoy every minute in that PBY. Of course, the Albatross is a stablemate.
I had seen that same HU-16 at Chino. With a new coat of paint she'd just come out of a restoration. The smell of fresh paint still noticeable. I think that was around 2016 or 2018, somtime 'round then.
Heard they're trying to reopen the line for new orders. Seems a Cat with new turbine engines has a demand. Who knew? https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/aviation/a44675006/catalina-seaplane-coming-back-as-modern-aircraft/
Back around 1956 my parents took me on visit from Montevideo to Buenos Aires, the aircraft was amphibian with two "cockpits". One was a small perspex shielded hatch on a flat deck over the nose, with a marine type hatch with small wheel in center to open from above. The navigator would crawl to it and then stand up to direct the pilot when the aircraft was on the water as it had to enter the maritime port on the river at each country destination. Memory is hazy but I clearly recall a small boat (lancha) with open tiller where the passengers were ferried from the dock to the aircraft. Lashed along side and we all climbed into the access door. I think it had 2 seats on one side and single on the other or my have been single row each side. To a 4 year old that was a magical journey. The flight was all of maybe 30 minutes, took longer to get onboard and offload at each end than in the air. Have never been able to locate a good photo of the craft but it might gave been like this one. https://comunidadnautica.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/362221_1.jpeg

ReplyDeleteThe PBY has Dutch markings. Why is the star on the Albatross only partly there?

Zooming in it looks like there is a hatch or window
