Machete

  1. Soon to be outlawed in the UK because people who abuse tools always obey the laws. Want to buy a bridge?

  2. Used to work on a Cuban construction gang down in the Keys. Machete blades weren’t rigid but had some flex. You wanted a guy to knock it off you wacked him broadside. Stung like a bastard

  3. I wonder if the serrated edge actually gets used?

  5. Mine is 2 ft long and came from a WWII surplus store. Great for trimming bushes and Xmas trees.

  6. SOG machete isn't bad. Not great, but not bad. Lacks the flexible blade of the traditional machete. Sawback works great. Couldn't build a house with it, but as far as firewood and a primitive shelter go, its alright.

  7. I've got a smaller Ontario Knife Co. Old Hickory Outdoors machete, a down sized 9" bladed machete that neatly fits in your pack. Too short for cutting a path through heavy growth but for chopping up tinder and even used as a kitchen blade, handy. Comes with a leather belt sheath.

In the jungle, the machete is not usually carried sheathed. It is cradled, ready to be dropped on vegetation or threatening snakes, ready at hand. If jungle travel is anticipated, one of the number one tools you want is a machete. Gavilan, Tramontina, Imcasa are Latin makers that put out a good product and an outstanding price. Don't forget a file to keep your blade sharp.

  8. 13"?
    More of a penile substitute.
It'll work, sort of, and do other things well, but it's a piss-poor machete.

An actual machete needs about 2' of flex blade (and less than 3') to get the job done.
    Uncle's version is 22", IIRC.

    Carry a working knife that's a knife, a saw that's a saw, and a machete that's a machete, and you'll be happier all around.

And if you're going to try using that saw blade, best keep a good IFAK, and stock it with lots of betadine and lac repair supplies. You're liable to need them.
A real folding saw is way cheaper, and hurts less. ;)

  10. the saw blade is a pain in the ass when you "try" to sheath a machete that has that feature. the saw aint near as useful as you first think it might be.

    1. That's why it comes in a hard nylon case. I bought one of these to put in my UTV. It's a good defense against smallish four-legged critters like wild dogs that go nuts and decide to attack you. Works to slow down two-legged ones, also.
