And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

I use my cast iron virtually everyday. And it will last a hundred years if you take care of it (one of my favorite skillets, a Griswold, is from the 1920's)
I agree about using a cast iron skillet frequently. We've got one of these.... https://www.amazon.com/Lodge-L9OG3ASHH41B-Griddle-Handle-Holder/dp/B07BZ2VSDC?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1 ....that almost never gets put away. After we've used it, we give it a quick wipe and dry it off (!), and then put it right back on the stovetop. There's no point in putting it away....somebody's going to use it very soon.
Cast iron will last longer than a century. I have family cast iron that's gate marked that is roughly 130 years old, and I still use it. The piece I use the most is an unmarked #7 griddle
I have a dutch oven that is said to be over 100 years old. I had to find a lid for it years back, found one that says "Made In America" on it. I use it to make spaghetti sauce or beef stew. I adore this pot! BarbaCat
Any saucepans I have bought in the last twenty years have been thrown away for one reason or another. When I cleared my parent's house some years ago I rescued the pots and pans, not cast iron. I remember them from my childhood, some were my grandmother's. They used to make things last whereas today everything has built-in obsolescence.

Truth!
DeleteCouple years ago I bought the one at your link. Doesn't play well on our glass top range. Terrified it's going to scratch it.
DeletePlus, the inside was VERY rough so I spent 2 hours sanding the hell out of it to get it smooth.

a #10 to the side of the head is a game changer.
ReplyDeleteI have an old Griswold dutch oven which is my favorite chili pot.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I own any iron less than 75 or 80 years old, passed down through the family. The original nonstick skillets!
