And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Hard choice but as sweet as any radial engine is, I have to give 1st place to 12-cyl. RR/Packard Merlin engines. Third place is Ford flathead V-8. Hi-Rev'n 327 gets forth place. Aside from A-10 Thunderbolts, tone-deaf to jets. Sound of an A-10 rolling in has to be pucker-time. Then the GAU-8 burps....
Pushrod covers for the pushrods that operate the intake and exhaust valves. The cam that operates the pushrods are behind the red ring, sort of. Complicated but brilliantly simple.
It's a DeHavilland Canada Beaver, aka a DHC-2, with a Pratt & Whitney R-985 radial engine, 985 cubic inches and 450hp. The original Hamilton-Standard 2 blade prop has been replaced by a Hartzell 3 blade. The first aircraft designed as a STOL aircraft for the bush. Go to youtube and search for "the immortal beaver".
I'll bet it sounds "sucky" with the plugs out.

ReplyDeleteWhat about a 12k hp hemi at the drag strip?

DeleteSomething about that radial piston sound
ReplyDeleteI know nothing about aviation engines, so, what are those spikey things stuck in the red ring behind the fan blade?

Think of it like a Harley Davidson engine that was involved in an orgy........
ReplyDeleteIf you want to know anything about a DeHavilland Beaver just ask Harrison Ford. He's been addicted to them for many years and loves to fly them.
