World's Largest Cylindrical Aquarium Bursts With 1,500 Tropical Fish Inside

According to police, the aquarium - known as the AquaDom, exploded early in the morning. Two people injured by glass shards were taken to a local hospital. Around 100 firefighters arrived on scene, which is currently under investigation.

Firefighters?  Should they have called the coast guard?

The incident caused "incredible maritime damage," according to the police, who noted that the aquarium held around 100 species of tropical fish.

"Incredible Maritime Damage."  Truly stupid phrase of the day.

  6. While not cylindrical, pretty much every Bass Pro Shop has a giant aquarium. I've always wondered about the damage that that much water would do to a place.

But what do I know....I live in a desert.

  7. When I saw, "all sorts of debris from bellhop trolleys..." I couldn't help but think "what about the bellhops themselves?" Or anyone in the lobby area?

    1. I read that it happened in the early morning hours, the guests were still in their rooms. Over 2 million pounds of water would have killed anyone in the vicinity.

  8. What were they thinking when they built that thing? After all, you would think somebody would have had the thought go through their mind about what would happen when, not if, the thing fails. It was filled with tropical fish, so that means it was filled with salt water which is more corrosive than water from a stream or lake, and was approaching 20 years old (opened in 2003).
