And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

House of Paquius Proculus. Via dell'Abbondanza, Pompeii. The Romans lived well.
They found flush toilets even where workers lived, some on the second floor, no less. First world civilization fell along with the Romans. Long time recovering...
Those Houses and Buildings in the old part f Pompeii are so well-preserved because they were filled with Volcanic Ash over a period of Weeks as the Eruption went on. The initial Explosion of the Volcano put out clouds of Hydrogen Sulfide Gas, killing everyone still there. Places like this, when being cleaned up, often have the Bodies of the Residents in the Basements. They get put in the Old Cemetery, that also has been excavated.
Actually, they mainly have ash molds of the bodies. They fill the molds with plaster to get a representation. 2000 years later, there's nothing much to bury but bones and woolen clothing fragments.
The extremely wealthy Romans lived well. Most Romans did not live like this.

How many earthquakes has that endured?
Delete"Some Romans" lived well
ReplyDeleteThey sure did! They put a shitter smack in the middle of that space.
ReplyDeleteThis shows how the people of Pompeii lived, not Romans.
ReplyDeleteThe people of Pompeii were Romans, except for slaves and freedmen, and a sprinkling of foreigners.
DeleteAll that wealth meant nothing as the family suffocated just like their slaves.
