  5. Even when Australia's size is compared to continental U.S., consider the population of it is much smaller than U.S.A. About 26 million people, compared to 332 million in USA. Or about 8%, more or less. That is a lot of empty space in the interior, as the coast lines of Australia by far are the major inhabited areas.

    Sort of dated now (2006) but Bill Bryson's book IN A SUNBURNED COUNTRY is a very interesting and funny book if you want to learn more about that country.

  6. As a continent, it is much closer to the equator than the U.S. Brisbane is as close as Miami is to the equator. Plus, we have more freedom here.
