And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Or about 8%, more or less. That is a lot of empty space in the interior, as the coast lines of Australia by far are the major inhabited areas.
Sort of dated now (2006) but Bill Bryson's book IN A SUNBURNED COUNTRY is a very interesting and funny book if you want to learn more about that country.
But there is a huge desert that takes up over a third of the continent.

As a continent, it is much closer to the equator than the U.S. Brisbane is as close as Miami is to the equator. Plus, we have more freedom here.
