Australia has the largest population of wild camels in the world - 1 million +. They roam over 37% of the continent (2.8m sq km - an area larger than Argentina). They were imported in the 1860s with Afghan cameleers as desert transport. They are now culled, as well as exported to the Middle East.
Fat, yes.
ReplyDeleteHappy, never.
They're mean, and they spit.
But until five seconds ago, I had no idea they had invasively populated the Australian Outback desert.
There were still random sightings of the last leftovers in the US from our abortive US Cavalry experiment with the Camel Corps, as late as 1891.
Camels are just like any other large animal that’s been domesticated. Horses bite and kick, so do cows and lamas. Hogs will eat you if you give them the chance. I’ve had to deal with them a few times in my life and they aren’t much different than any other large animal. Be assertive without being a dick and you’ll be okay. Eod1sg Ret
ReplyDeleteI've been around horses and cows quite a bit, and not had them spit routinely at everyone.
ReplyDeleteCamels spit because they can, not because they've been mistreated.
