  1. When I looked at this painting I wondered what is the point, what stoey is being told. Afterall, there in a pastoral scene is mother (our mother) with children gazing upon a memorial of war. The child holds a sword. So I looked to the bibliography of the artist.

Carl Larsson had a very troubled childhood. To say he was impoverished is an understatement. He also held great resentment of his dad.

Now knowing of the artist, I think there is a great nostalgia, a desire for the pleasant childhood which is the right of all children yet stolen from Larsson. Imagine the anguish of creating the image that was denied him. Lovingly, he gave to the world a depiction of life as it should be.
