  2. Any historical data on this painting? I've loved clipper ships for decades. Even have walked the deck of the Cutty Sark.

  3. Both ships with square sails set for dead astern wind, and taut canvas, and passing at 180 degrees. What's wrong with this depiction? I'm thinking the artist knows sailing ships, but not sailing.

    1. They are heading towards each other with the wind from astern for each other.

    2. I'm with you Will, this does not add up at all. Aside from the diametrically opposed winds indicated by the sails, both ships are listing as though the wind was coming from the right as well.
