And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Don't assume some of these folks owned shoes for daily work, they might own one pair and that was reserved to wear to Sunday mass, weddings and funerals, or not own any. Home made leather boots lined with dry straw or hay was more common.
Worth seeing is director Michael Powell's 1930's film, based on the abandonment of St. Kilda, The Edge of the World.
