Looks like a propane leak to me. I am guessing the gas had been on for a while and had made it partway up the flue before being touched off. Looks like a home-made cooking area, so there's no telling what else is going on....
Just guessing, looks like a old wood or coal stove. The flu pipe is embedded in the wall and connects behind the stove. The black smoke is the soot being released from dirty flu pipe? Maybe she used something flammable like gasoline to start the wood burning? The good news is the gal get's to remodel her kitchen.
