  1. Navy ships, especially subs, hit marine life a LOT. Damage like this is routine. I was stationed aboard the USS Simon Lake, a submarine tender, and we saw subs come in with hull damage more times than not.

    Fixing broken subs was our function and we always had plenty of work!

  2. That's the Japanese Soryu, after it collided with the freighter Ocean Artemis, while coming to periscope depth.

    Shallow water plays Hell with sonar.

  5. If you zoom in, it looks like there's some bodywork missing, just ahead of the broken wing.

    I believe the Japanese call it, a career limiting occurence....
