  1. That was the sports car to have in it's day. There were (I thnk) 3 different
series. The last one was supertuned and turbocharged by an American racer
and it was the fastest prodcution in the world for a year or two.

    1. Actually 2 different versions, R1 (which this one is)289 cubic inch w/4 barrel carb, or R2 289 cubic inch w/supercharger. There were also 9 built with an R3 engine, 304.5 cubic inch with supercharger. Andy Granatelli set land speed records at Bonneville with various Studebakers including Avanti's

  2. I actually saw one or two of those in the wild back in the day. Recognized the picture immediately.

  4. Used to see a guy in '63-'64 who drove by every morning at the same time I was waiting for the bus to arrive....quite a car in those days....

  5. Saw a beautifully restored Avanti on the road a few months ago ... then met a local Studebaker aficionado who confirmed a local guy owns it.

  7. This one is, in fact, a supercharged R2. It is the first production Studebaker Avanti and is in the LeMay museum in Tacoma, WA. Note the poster in the background with the serial number 1001. Also note the small supercharged badge on the front fender.
