Bale even looked like Ken Miles.
They even had Lee Iaccoca. Enzo Ferrari's insulting rejection of Ford's offer to buy the Italian company, delivered to Iacocca in spicy Italian, was a classic scene, and ignited the whole competition.
Saw Jim Hall, Carroll Shelby, Roger Penske, Ken Miles race in an SCCA race at Savannah, Georgia track in '65 or '66. We stayed in the same motel in the room next to Penske. His Corvette Grand Sport was on a trailer just outside. Shelby was driving a Cobra and JIm Hall was driving a Mongoose (heh, heh).

ReplyDeleteThere were 3 battles in the Ford/Ferrari war and Ferrari won the first two using
ReplyDeleteoutdated small bore SOCH engines. There was no way Enzo Ferrari could compete
against a purpose-built machine that took more than 3 years and untold millions
of dollars to develop. That third race ended the glory days of SEFAC.
Now on netflix watch the documentary about the backstory, American Shelby.

DeleteAs a 5 year old kid in '72, I met an old man with a ratty '65 bigblock Chevelle and inside the lid of his strip toolbox was a bumper sticker that said "Next year Enzo's ass is mine"... Apparently Carroll wasn't the least bit intimidated by the old wop.
