And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The size of this flag flown on a spanish ship at the battle of Trafalgar (1805)
I thought maybe that was the flag of the Spanish flagship Santissima Trinidad, a 130-gun ship of the line. It would make sense for the flagship to have an extraordinarily endowed flag, but no. It's from the San Ildefonso, a regular 74-gun ship of the line.
I guess they wanted everyone to know that they were Spanish.
