You'd think, with all the money they undoubtably spent on this project, that the engineers would make an effort to get the landing gear right.

  3. To be fair here, they were looking to save every ounce they could. Sometimes that savings can go just a tiny bit too far.

    That's not a paved runway either. They landed on a dried lakebed.

    All it takes is a bit of extra moisture or a soft spot and the result is what you see.
