Toward the end of WW2, both US and German aircraft began sporting genuine cannon for direct fire missions where accuracy counted. The German Stuka and later Fokke Wulf aircraft mounted essentially two 3" rifles to take out tanks. Today we use missiles to do the job (unless you're in a Spectre Gunship) but I've always found that evolution interesting.
