The day was just too nice to stay home and do chores, so when the youngest daughter asked to go on a drive to the mountains, I was game.
So it was up Highway 88 to Cat Creek Road, and then off to the north to wander through some country I wasn't familiar with.
Being the weekend of the Fourth meant the country was filled with campers, and most of the campgrounds were packed, although the farther one got away from 88, we did see some open sites.
The two of us drove down a spur, and found a neat little spot to do some shooting.
Further over the ridge, and we came to the North Fork of the Cosumnes River, which this time of year is nothing more than a creek. However, I was surprised to see some decent sized trout in the bigger pools. Good thing I brought the pole.
Here the daughter tries to lure a fish to bite.
The Cosumnes, surrounded here by thick brush. Keeps the fishermen away from the fish, but also keeps them catchable if you can push through the alders and manage a clean cast.
There was some pretty big timber to climb over. Not a problem for the youthful.
This country was all close enough so we could be back at the house for dinner at six. To summarize, we burned a little powder, wet a line, lost a lure, explored some country, fed a few mosquitoes and smelled the pines. Not bad for a kid and a kid at heart.
A plum perfect day, good going kids!
ReplyDeleteFile it under wonderful. And enjoy the moments because the kids grow up (fortunately/unfortunately).
ReplyDeleteYeah, I noticed that, which is one reason I am willing to get it together and do these spur of the moment drives. The opportunity is there now, but that window of opportunity is closing.
DeleteLooks like fun! Wish I had been there. :)
