Camo'ed Mossberg 5.56

The summer gun project is a Mossberg MVP Patrol chambered in 5.56.  The price was right, at about five bills, and the idea is to make a perfect "truck gun."

It has many characteristics of a Scout Rifle, as defined by Col. Cooper, but the 5.56 chambering takes it out of that definition even though it makes the weight and length criteria.

The trigger is surprisingly good for this level of gun, and the Mossberg takes PMags, which are cheaper and more widely available than other brands.

The original Patrol as it came from the LGS, with the bolt and butt pad off and the beginnings of tapings on things I don't want painted.

First coat.  Here in central California, it's brown and dry six or seven months out of the year, and the camo is aimed at matching that environment.

The final product, finished last weekend.

It has a rail for a scope, but I think I'll leave it with the excellent open sights for now.  For a truck gun, I think it's more rugged and able to withstand the bumping and thumping necessitated by travel over rocky roads without a scope.

35 inches long - very handy - but don't put it down in the weeds, or you might not find it again.

  1. Looks great. I think it will blend in very nicely here in the valley.

    1. Hey, RAF, next time you are in California, we need to go shooting! I'll provide all the guns and ammo, and you can pay me back with your Greenland hunting stories.
