Lightning Struck Tree

  1. That looks more like a hazard tree about to be dopped by a Forest Service C-faller after a big wildfire has passed though. Dangerous work.
Trees like that can burn for weeks and sometimes months after the fire is contained, if not taken care of.
That hollow spot is what's known in the woods as a 'Cat's Face'.

  2. Lightning struck trees are the best - you don't have to wait for the wood to dry.
