The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? When I was a small kid in the sixties I read about the forest service hiring people to spend a summer in one of these to watch for fires. I thought that sounded like the coolest summer job ever. By the time I was old enough to do it airplanes had taken over the job and the last of the fire towers and cabins had long been closed.
we have one tower left standing in Gates County, NC on Rt 158. my mother: "I remember when the Three C's boys built it."
Kerouac and a guy shacked in one out west, not an unheard of arrangement. in that era while using mescaline, he coined the phrase "walking on water wasn't built in a day".

Edward Abbey, not precisely my favorite dood but better than some of the current crop of tree kissers, did that gig for years.
