The horse is not pleased with that flash/bang

  1. Takes some time to train the horse not to react to the firing of the weapon.

  2. The horse would be going straight up if she was in trouble.
Looks like just another day at the rodeo for the hayburner.

  3. Do they make hearing protection for horses? I hope so.

It always used to bug me at the beginning of The Lone Ranger when Clayton Moore is repeatedly firing his Silver Bullets right over Silver's head, right where his ears are taking the full effect of the muzzle blast.

But then again, maybe I think too much. Probably do.

    2. Yes they do. Big foam earplugs for the horses. I have a couple of nieces that do this. They shoot black powder blanks at balloons while the horse is at a dead run. Impressive.

  4. Went to a civil war reenactment replete with cannons and horses. Small arms don’t hold a candle to cannons when it comes to the noise cannons make. Spooked the hell out of the horses there.

  5. A friend involved in mounted shooting competition (they use black powder and corn meal in the bullets instead of a solid projectile) trained his horses to ignore gunfire by shooting a cap pistol before and during feeding time. They spooked at first, but settled down quickly and soon ignored the sound. To answer an earlier question, they do provide hearing protection for the horses in competition. Some use cotton batting, others actually have hearing protectors made to fit the horse.

  6. Badgers prefer automatics, as we dislike cylinder gap blast.

  7. My grandfather was a Cavalry Officer in WW1 (the 'Great War' - and with horses). I remember him telling me that the training around cannons, rifles and handguns for horses took about 3 months of everyday exposure.

He also said that, even after that, they still might get spooked if you fired right over their head while riding. The Lone Ranger intro might have been using something 'smoke only' with sound added later. Or maybe it took a few takes to get.
