This just rumbled over the house. Is that not borate smeared on the belly of the plane? Flaps down, landing gear down - coming in for a reload, I guess.

  1. They've been periodically flying approach/departure over my house a couple of mountain ranges east for a while. That time of year.

  2. Looks like fire retardant drop on Ammon Fire and/or Six Rivers Lightning complex fire to the west of Redding. Follow the plane at https://globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=a5dfff

  4. First thing I thought was a YC-15. We flew slow speed chase on the test para drops in an O-2A. Got to go on a few of those.

  5. Your photo is of Tanker 162, one of several RJ85s operated by Aero Flite, Inc. out of Spokane, WA. The RJ 85s are very similar to the BAe-146s flown by Neptune Aviation, Missoula, Montana. Both deliver a nominal 3000 gallons of retardant.

BTW, it's not Borate, it's Phos-check, a product of Perimeter Solutions.

  6. I was talking with the owner of a airplane maintenance company last week. Apparently, the feds did some studies after wings came off planes owned by H&P aviation of Greybull, Wyoming in 2002. The stresses are high enough, they discovered, that firefighting hours are now worth ten regular flight hours.

  7. Hey, that plane flew over me at work the other day in Redding. Flew by low and was impressive to look at that close. Very thankful for them this time of year!
