  1. Beautiful scene and viewing painting & photos of the beach, pretty much unchanged in 1923.
Reminds me of an 1850's painting of the beach near Lima, Peru. Much has changed in that area including a major roadway but the "then-now" views are easily recognizable.
If interested, the following link provides basic information.

    Artist: Johann Moritz Rugendas (1802-1858)

Seaside resorts in the Lima area are located on the top of sandy cliffs (barrancos). A feature of the local ecology were the trickles of water which filtered through the cliffs into beach-side caves, where fishermen then later on bathers would shower after coming out of the sea. Chorrillos ("trickles") derives its name from that phenomenon. An effect of this filtration was that vegetation grew on the cliffs. Thus, this stretch of coast received its name the Costa Verde (Green Coast).
Chorrillos, was originally an Indian fishing village. It's first church, established in the late seventeenth century was dedicated to St Peter, patron saint of fishermen. By mid-nineteenth century, Chorrillos had become a flourishing holiday resort with local residents finding a new source of income by providing services to visitors. Among such services were rustic houses which were rented out to visitors, providing supplies and guided mules taking visitors down the cliffs to the beach.
