And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Burbot from Marcus Elesier Bloch’s Ichthyologie ou, Histoire naturelle des poissons. Berlin, 1796.
First one I ever caught was in early June on the shore of the north arm of GSL. I had never seen one before, when I grabbed it behind the gill to remove the hook it wrapped up my arm, freaked me right out. Had been feeding the dog jackfish as we carried in minimum supplies (ice was still on the lake), she turned up her noise to jackfish after a price of lincod.

ReplyDeleteWe have burbot up in Northern Wisconsin. Since they are freshwater cid, I want to go up north, and catch and fry very fresh beer batter cod!
